'Justice League' Movie in 2013?

Plus WB Plans to re-invent Batman...

This isn't the first time that we've seen a storm of Justice League movie rumors hit the net, but it's been dead for a while. Now we hear that it's planned and hoping for a 2013 release?

LA Times did a special profile on Jeff Robinov, president of the motion pictures department, and he mentioned the planned JL movie. SuperHeroHype sums up the profile:

But Robinov said a new Justice League script is in the works. Also being written for Warner are scripts featuring the Flash and Wonder Woman, who could be spun off into their own movies after Justice League. Though Wonder Woman is also in the works as a television pilot for NBC produced by Warner, Robinov dismissed that as a sticking point. “Wonder Woman could be a film as well, the same way that ‘Superman Returns’ came out while ‘Smallville’ was on,” he said, referring to the 2006 film that put Brandon Routh in the cape and the television show starring Tom Welling that is now in its 10th and final season.

I knew Flash and Wonder Woman couldn't be far behind GL and Supes, but I wasn't expecting a full on team movie before the solo hero franchises were in place. A decidedly different approach than Marvel. Not without it's pro's, but also a risky move.

So who would be featured in the JL? Considering the various money making franchise possibilities, I would say it's fair to assume we would see Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Batman, at least. Not to mention whatever side members WB is interested in.

Aquaman? More than likely, especially with a new series by Geoff Johns (the guy who's successfully rebooted some of the biggest DC heroes) coming out soon. Check out more on the series over at Grizzly Bomb. So I wouldn't rule him out as a contender for a place on the team. Who do I want to see on the team? Everyones favorite Martian.

J'onn J'onzz/ Martian Manhunter is and pretty much always has been a core member of the Justice League. He's been present in almost every incarnation of the team, and i think it would almost be an insult to his character if he wasn't included in the movie version. It could almost be a key plot point that brings the team together, just saying.

It's way too early too start casting this movie with my dream team. So we'll stick with who we know. They are obviously planning to spin off both Flash and WW so they are in. Supes and Gl both have new franchises hopefuls coming out soon, so they are in. But then we hit the problem of the next addition to the team.

The Batman. But probably not the Batman we are used to kicking ass in the theaters. From the same article Robinov goes on to talk about the plans to re-invent Batman:

Robinov knows that the most bankable part of his superhero empire has been Nolan and his Gotham City films –  the studio has yet to deliver a 21st century superhero blockbuster hit without Nolan in the director’s seat. Batman will continue to be a centerpiece property beyond next year’s “The Dark Knight Rises” and Nolan’s departure from the franchise. “We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

Now this statement has been flying all over news sites with the possibility of yet another reboot of the Batman. But I'm not totally throwing my hat into the reboot ring. Here's the reason. Obviously Nolan's current take on the Batman would probably not make a great addition to a team of superheroes. It just doesn't fit, and I wouldn't want it to. So the need comes to re-invent the character.

A Batman more relevant in the world of the superhero. A re-invent with Nolan behind as a producer. Kind of leads me to believe that while The Dark Knight Rises is the last chapter of Nolan's trilogy, perhaps it's only the beginning.

With recent news that the production script for TDKR doesn't even include the ending, maybe there's a bit more to this ending than we realize. Either it ends in such a way that a reboot is actually necessary (like the death of Batman) or the ending is one that leads to Batman realizing he needs to change to fit into a world of heroes (Witnesses the coming tide of superhuman's with a cameo appearance from Cavill as Superman).

Okay, so maybe I'm reaching here. Okay... I'm more than likely reaching here. I'll leave it at maybe we'll see more of an evolution of Batman so he will properly fit in the world of the colorfully costumed crime fighter.

Here's the kicker. There is no way Warner Bros. pulls off a team movie by 2013. And if they do, it will more than likely be rushed and far from their best effort. Do we really want to see a rushed movie that holds the fate of so many of DC's hero franchises?

What do you think, News Team? Excited for the news of a Justice League movie but threatened by the possibility of yet another Batman reboot? Which Justice League members do you want to see on the big screen

  1. That's what I was telling Kronner. There isn't enough time to do what Marvel is doing with Avengers right? They need a year just to have a couple more individual DC superhero movies, like Flash and Aquaman. I hope it all works out and the quality doesn't suffer.
