When news came down the other day that JGL has officially been added to the cast of The Dark Knight Rises, the character he was playing was announced alongside. But then another report came out saying that he wasn't playing that character. Here are the reports from /Film:
Over the weekend, Variety reported that the long speculated role Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be playing in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises was Alberto Falcone, son of Gotham mob boss Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson ). Variety, a usually well-resourced and accurate publication simply cited “insiders.” Now, Entertainment Weekly has cited “a source close to the situation” saying Gordon-Levitt won’t be playing Alberto Falcone.
Who’s right? Your guess is as good as ours. It’s certainly time for Warner Brothers to come out and make it official though, unless they’re doing this on purpose. Read both sides of the story and some rumor control speculation.
Variety’s original story said the following late Friday night:
Now that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to reteam with his “Inception” director Christopher Nolan on “The Dark Knight Rises,” insiders tell Variety that Gordon-Levitt will play Alberto Falcone, the son of Mafia chieftain Carmine Falcone, the character Tom Wilkinson played in “Batman Begins.”
But Entertainment Weekly wrote this on Monday:
A source close to the situation says that recent reports that Gordon-Levitt will play Alberto Falcone (a.k.a. the Holiday Killer) — the son of former mob kingpin, Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) — are incorrect.
This whole casting speculation has been a little ridiculous. We covered the Falcone rumor in the last Rumor Report, and it does seem like it could be a likely role for JGL. But then we get a conflicting report, and it's all over the place. /Film had a little more to say about that:
Whether or not Gordon-Levitt plays Falcone, Robin, the Riddler or Batman himself isn’t really the issue here. Much more disturbing is that two very well-respected publications with well-placed and reliable sources are getting completely conflicting information. The most obvious conclusion is that one of these sources is simply wrong. However, it’s much scarier to think of the possibility that both sources believed themselves to be correct. EW and Variety don’t just run rumors unless they’re from very well-trusted sources. I worked at Entertainment Weekly and researchers called me to double check the spelling of my name. They’re very careful.
That means it’s a distinct possibility both sources think they’re right and, maybe, Warner Brothers and Nolan’s camp are purposely leaking out incorrect information, either to screw with blogs like ours, or to find out who is passing information along to the trades. It would be like putting a watermark on a DVD of a movie and then that watermark appearing on a torrent site. You’d know who leaked it.
So who is JGL going to play? I honestly don't know anymore. Could be Falcone and they are just trying to hold off on the reveal, or it really is a different character. I hope we eventually get a confirmation form the studio, something I would expect to come quickly.
Now, along with the news of JGL's official casting, there was another announcement that Juno Temple was being eyed to join the cast as a "street-smart Gotham girl".
Now this could mean a lot of things. With the inclusion of Catwoman the character could very well be Holly Robinson, an early associate of Selina Kyle's.
Less likely is a young Barbara Gordon, as the timeline doesn't quite add up, but it's possible. What struck me as I was reading the reports was another character that has been mentioned.
In the same Rumor Report where we talked about JGL's possible casting, there was also mention from a location scout reporting that they were looking for "Robin's cave".
Could Juno be playing a Robin-like character? She wouldn't be the first female to fill the role, as both Stephanie Brown and Carrie Kelly (The Dark Knight Returns) have worn the red and green.
... But...
As much as some part of me wants to believe that they would include Robin, I still don't think it's that likely. My money's on Holly Robinson, a prostitute who lived with Selina Kyle in Miller and Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One. She even eventually takes on the role of Catwoman for a little while.
I'm sure we'll hear more news regarding the actual characters that we'll see in the movie in the next few weeks, because you can't really throw a stone without hitting some form of casting speculation about The Dark Knight Rises.
Black Mask damn it! Let it be Black Mask
