The Flaming C... AKA Conan O' Brien?

That's right, if you've ever wondered what Conan O'Brien would look like as a superhero, wait no longer. Comics Alliance has the story:

After realizing that his new talk show is produced not just fifty feet away from the legendary Warner Bros. Animation building at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, comedian Conan O'Brien rushed over to discuss comics and animation with Chief Creative Officer Peter Girardi and DC Universe animator/producer/mastermind Bruce Timm. O'Brien offered Girardi some humorously unhelpful criticisms of some characters from the DC Comics Encyclopedia, and rather unfairly forces Bruce Timm to design The Flaming C, a superhero based on and created by Conan O'Brien that once seen can never, ever be unseen.

"Whoever invented this one, he was trying to get out early for the weekend," O'Brien told Girardi in reference to Green Lantern, whose power is to create anything he can imagine - as long as it's green. O'Brien was also dismayed by the "dandy cowboy" Bat Lash, Ultra the Multi-Alien ("this is a f*cking mess") and, most especially, Captain Boomerang, whose weakness O'Brien identified as "pretty much any enclosed space where there's no room to throw a boomerang."

Later, O'Brien sat down with Bruce Timm, arguably the most successful television animator of his generation and responsible for the best superhero cartoons ever produced, and asked him to design a Conan-based superhero with "more of an ass" as well as loafers, stockings and garters, oven mits and a jai alai glove.

More 'Spider-Man' Casting! And Gwen Stacy Set Photos!

Casting news doesn't end when it comes to the 'Spider-Man' reboot, and this casting seems to lend itself to more possible plot points.


First off, Splashpage.mtv has the casting of Eugene 'Flash' Thompson, Peter Parker's High School bully yet staunch supporter of all things Spidey. Also Peter's eventual best friend, believe it or not. Chris Zylka, best known for his role on, uh, Hannah Montana, will be portraying Flash in the reboot.

But what's a Spider-Man movie without Flash? That doesn't bring out any plot points. Oh, there's more casting news? Right.


SuperHeroHype reports the role of Billy Conners, who will be played by relative newcomer Miles Elliot. For those who don't know he is the young son of Dr. Curt Conners/ The Lizard, leading more cred to the belief that Rhys Ifans will indeed be playing the role of Doc Conners.

And finally, Splashpage.mtv has some set photos which show Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, at a funeral. Obviously that leads to the question of who's funeral? I would have to say most likely her father, Capt. George Stacy, played by Denis Leary.

Set photos are nice, but there's only one thing I want to see, and that's the costume. Bring it on.

'Thor' Poster Debuts!

The next big Marvel movie coming out is the Kenneth Branagh helmed Thor starring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder. We got our first look at some footage at the SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con) along with a trailer and yesterday the poster for the flick was released:

Looks pretty sweet while keeping it basic, much like the first poster for Iron Man.  It really highlights the amazing costume work that this film has shown us already. I like the poster, and we get a look at the official trailer tonight! So expect more news form Thor coming fast over the next few months.

Thor is scheduled to drop on May 6, 2011.

'Batman: Arkham City' Superbad Teaser Trailer

Now when Action News promises you ACTION, that's what we bring. And nothing is more action packed than watching a 30 second teaser of Batman doing what he does best, kicking ass and not caring about names. Check it out:



Dope. I just can't wait to jump under the cowl again and play as one of my all time favorite comic characters. Batman: Arkham Asylum  was a geeky jelly filled fun fest, and I expect nothing less from the sequel. 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' Teaser Trailer

Michael Bay has released the first teaser for the 3rd movie to feature a ridiculous number of explosions, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Be warned, there isn't a single explosion in the teaser, so I'm a little lost for words:

Now doesn't that almost look like it should have been the trailer for the first movie? And who the hell is this guy? And why does he have a beard?

Now I am not as well-versed in Transformers trivia as I am in everything else, so the only guess I have is Unicron? The planet sized Transformer? No? Yes? I don't know anymore. Who do you think it is?

Emma Stone Shows Us Her Gwen Stacy!

Emma Stone has revealed her blonde locks on the red carpet, so I guess this is our first look at Gwen Stacy from Marc Webb's Spider-Man:

I dig it, but I love Emma Stone, so I may have some bias on the topic. Stone is a natural blonde, but on screen we are all used to the cherry red she usually goes with. I think she has the Gwen look, just take a look at a pic of Gwen from the comics:

The Urban 30 Weekly Update!!! Season 4 - Week 10

Hey Action News Team!!! Welcome to the first edition of the weekly update of the The Urban 30!!! While you can get your dose of the U30's adventures daily at urban3zero.com, I wanted to put out a Saturday edition compiling all the week's posts, an easy way to get caught up if you've missed anything. 


This week the U30 continues to piece the team back together in the brain washed city of Washington DC. Months ago Mayor Solomon Winters, AKA Aiho, the leader of the alien Ruver invasion, mind wiped the entire city and most of its heroes, creating a 'utopia' directly under his control. But things are starting to break down in the city, and the Mayor's 'utopia' isn't running as smoothly as he hoped.


Here's the weekly rundown:

Sonus - When One Door Closes

Leroy/Sonus finally starts to tread his own path in his new life, after recent events and the new 'friends' of the last few weeks. But when he finds a 'gift' in his work locker, could his new path take him back to his old life?

Drifter - First Encounter

Drifter tries to be the superhero he thinks he is after waking up with no memory in DC. While attempting to stop a bank robbery, he is attacked by an alien Ruver in disguise as a cop, and is forced to prove that he can be the hero he believes he is.

Gehenna - Intervention

When Gehenna was 'unlocked' by Engels, they both learned more than they expected about one another. Gehenna tries to help Engels deal with his recent relapse to alcoholism, but this might be a problem that Gehenna can't deal with alone.

Elemental - The Things We Do For Love

Terra, mind wiped and living with the Mayor as his wife, is growing restless cooped up in the Mayor's tower. With the Mayor's plan to run for Senate and eventually the presidency, the opportunity arises for Terra to help the Mayor's campaign by feeding the homeless. Sometimes things are never as simple as they start out to be...

Hitman - Bitter Friends, Bitter Enemies

Hitman's been on the go since he escaped from the Mayor's prison weeks ago, finding new allies and re-uniting the mind wiped members of the Urban 30. He starts to check out key figures of DC's organized crime world, where he discovers a clue to the whereabouts of his old friend and missing member of the U30.

'The Walking Dead' Writing Staff Fired

News broke a bit ago that Frank Darabont, the developer behind AMC's hit The Walking Dead had fired off the entire writing staff, it left a lot of us internet media types puzzled. I mean, the show is a success, breaking ratings records, and was picked up for a second season after the first episode, so why fix what ain't broke? 


Now obviously one would think that now Darabont himself would be writing the series second season, which may be the case for a lot of episodes. But the plan is to follow the route that has served Doctor Who well and freelance the episodes out to writers, as opposed to the writing room collaborations. 


Splashpage.mtv talked to Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, and he says it's not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be, and that the announcement was "unfortunate" and "premature":

"It's kind of unfortunate that it's being reported that our writing staff has been fired because that's not the case," he said. "It makes Frank look bad. I don't think Frank wants it out there that he's just firing people off of a successful show seemingly for no reason."

Kirkman added that executive producer Charles "Chic" Eglee, one of the many writers reportedly ousted from "The Walking Dead," actually chose to leave on his own accord.

"Chic Eglee is a high-level television writer," said Kirkman. "He was brought onto 'The Walking Dead' with the idea that Frank was going to work on the first season and then go off and do movies. Chic didn't want to be second-in-command on a show when he's used to being a top dog, and so he decided to go off and do something else, which is something that happens and is not a big deal."

As for how Darabont and Kirkman plan on tackling the writers situation going into season two of "The Walking Dead," Kirkman said: "It's a little premature to be nailing down. I don't know if it's going to be a freelance situation or if we're going to have writers in a writers' room."

"Everybody knows what they're doing," he added. "AMC has done a few television shows before, and Frank Darabont is a professional. Whatever is decided, I don't think it will affect the show one way or another."

Robert Kirkman also said that he would be writing an episode in the second season, so while I think they would only benefit from a group of writers, after the awesome first season I trust them to right by the series and keep a good show good.

'Spider-Man' Adds Another Villain And Casts Peter Parker's Parents

The upcoming Spider-Man reboot has added a few more names to it's growing cast list, and they are kind of unexpected castings. The first two are the casting of Peter's parents, Richard and Mary Parker. Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson will be portraying Petey's parents, in I'm assuming a flashback or something like that, as yea, they die.


The other casting news is the addition of Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) as a character named Van Atter, who is listed as being a villain. Khan joins Rhys Ifans (The Replacements, Little Nicky) as more than likely Dr. Curt Conners/ The Lizard.

But who is Van Atter? It's certainly not a known name in the Spider-Man mythos, and it took some digging to find out who this character is. But find out, I did. And if this is the character that Khan will be playing it opens up a lot of plot possibilities.

This is the Proto-Goblin, whose name is Nels Van Atter, and he has only had one appearance in the history of Spidey comics, and that was in Peter Parker: Spider-Man -1. Proto is a failed test subject of the Goblin serum, later used by Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin. So if Khan really is playing the character of the Proto-Goblin, it could mean that they are setting this movie up early for the Green Goblin to maybe be the franchise baddie as opposed to the one movie then I die appearance. 

Now this is actually a pretty good idea, and I'm quite surprised by this random character grab from Spidey's past. Impressive. What do you think, Action News Team? Is this villain just a little too obscure to be getting the big movie treatment?

Christopher Nolan Hands Off Superman Reboot

When news broke that Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) along with his bro Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer (Blade Trinity, The Unborn) were going to be the creative force behind the upcoming Superman reboot, there were a lot of happy fans. His work with the bat-franchise is amazing, and Inception was ground-breaking. Then they found a director in Zach Snyder (300, Watchmen) and the project really got under way.

Now Splashpage.mtv reports:

Speaking with Hit Fix, Nolan's wife and producing partner Emma Thomas revealed that "Superman" is currently a Snyder project through and through, saying: "We are handing it off to him."

Thomas revealed that the Nolan team simply brought the new "Superman" movie "to an appropriate screenplay," with the rest of the work falling on Snyder and his trustworthy crew.

So while Nolan's involvement would have been preferred, you also don't want too many hands in the cookie jar. And it's about damn time Superman got a good movie that will please the fans, the general populace, and the financial requirement's of the studio's so we can get a proper franchise out of this. 

And since we are on the subject of Nolan, Lets talk The Dark Knight Rises. From the same article he talks about the rumors from...well, us, the online entertainment community.


The filmmaker said that he feels that speculation surrounding "The Dark Knight Rises" is coming at an alarmingly early stage, given the fact that he's still finishing the film's screenplay. Nolan said that he's far from finished with casting, especially because the script isn't finalized just yet.


And over at SuperHeroHype:


Nolan, bearded and affable, explained that he’s scrambling to finish the script for The Dark Knight Rises, his third Batman movie, which he’s writing in collaboration with his brother Jonathan, mostly from his oceanfront abode in the Paradise Cove trailer park in Malibu.The script is due in January for a July release. But he wouldn’t say what the story’s about or who the villain is, other than to confirm that Inception’s Tom Hardy will play “a key role, not saying good or bad,” and to shoot down reports that he’ll resurrect The Joker by including unused footage of Heath Ledger’s performance in the previous chapter.  “That’s all wrong.” 


Good to hear, let the performance stay where it is, and move on. I can't wait until we finally get some details on this flick, but filming is supposed to begin in May, so hopefully we'll have a finished script soon.

'Captain America: Super Soldier' Official Site Launched

Easy now, Marvel didn't change the title of the upcoming Captain America movie, this is the video game. Captain America: Super Soldier is the new game from SEGA that ties-in to the movie, Captain America: The First Avenger. The official site has been released, showcasing some screens, trailer, and game info. It looks decent, although nothing in it really blew my mind. You take a look and tell me what you think:



Hmmm... underwhelmed is the feeling I would have to describe here. In this day and age when we are constantly blown away by amazing video games, this almost seems like a mediocre offering.

Here's a quick synopsis from SuperHeroHype:

In the game, players will become Captain America as he faces the Red Skull and his army in an epic third- person action adventure set in the darkest days of World War II. Wielding Captain America's legendary shield, gamers will engage in free-flowing combat and acrobatic platforming to infiltrate Hydra’s mysterious castle and battle the infamous Iron Cross, the forces of Hydra, and a host of nefarious enemies serving the Red Skull. As the First Avenger himself, players must defeat the evil scientist Arnim Zola and his wartime experiments, combining powerful melee combos and shield attacks to devastating effect.

'All-Star Superman' Is The Next DC Animated Movie

DC has really been kicking ass and taking names when it comes to the animated movies that they are producing. With a new one almost every three or four months, DC is getting some of their greatest stories told in a new way and brought to new people. 

All-Star Superman is the next feature to come out, and I couldn't be happier. This was one of the greatest Superman tales I have ever read, and it was written by Grant Morrison, which pretty much guarantees it's awesomeness. Not to mention the great art of Frank Quitely.

'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' Photos

The first images from the Neveldine/Taylor (Crank) helmed Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance starring Nic Cage have hit the web, and fans of the first Ghost Rider... well, I don't think their were too many fans. Umm...Where was I going with this? 


Anyways, the photos aren't much, but they show Cage as Johnny Blaze, chilling on his new Hellcycle: 

"Stop looking at me, swan."

And here is our first look at young Danny Ketch, who in the comics is Johnny Blaze's successor to the mantle of the Ghost Rider:

"I squish your head"

Now normally I would be pretty jazzed about another Marvel movie coming our way, but I still have the bad taste of Ghost Rider in my mouth, and it's not pleasant. But with a new directing team and hopefully a better story, this may be something to look forward too.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is slated to be released February 17, 2012.

Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone Talk 'Spider-Man'

With a lot of the casting news out of the way for Marc Webb's Spider-Man, we are starting to hear some news from the stars of the flick, with rehearsals recently starting. Not quite everything that I want to hear yet but it's still early. So we hear a little bit from Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy):

MTV NEWS: Has there been a surreal moment from 2010 that kind of encapsulates what a crazy year it's been for you?

ANDREW GARFIELD: I did have a strange moment when I was told I was going to play this role. I was like, "Oh, wow, this is something I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid." There was a moment of total boyish excitement. It was this cosmic convergence where I was in the past, present and future all at once. In the future, I was thinking about my nephews that are going to have an uncle who's Spider-Man, but then I thought that could be bad because kids can bully you for any reason, and it's like, "Where's your uncle now when I'm beating the sh-- out of you?" I'll have to go to their school a lot, but by that time I'll be really old and fat and no one will believe I was Spider-Man. Then I was thinking about the past and when I was first shown a "Spider-Man" comic. It inspired me because I was one of those people who felt stronger on the inside than they looked on the outside. And then in the present moment, I was thinking this moment is something I'll never forget.

MTV: There was so much competition to play Peter Parker. Do you ever think, "Why me?" In your own mind, what is it that you think won you the role?

GARFIELD: I have no idea! I'm glad I didn't have to make the decision. I have no idea why they cast me. If I started thinking about that, I think I'd sabotage myself and have to pull myself out of the movie and be like, "I think you made the wrong decision."

MTV: Don't do that! We spoke to Kirsten Dunst recently and she said that two things the new cast has to get used to are swinging around a lot and acting to nothing? Can you handle that?

GARFIELD: I'm OK with swinging. I've been swinging since I was four. Wait, no, that can be misinterpreted!

MTV: That'd be a very different movie.

GARFIELD: My goodness.

MTV: Where do we go from here? Tennis balls?

GARFIELD: Yes, tennis balls. Acting with tennis balls and green screen and all that, I love that idea. I did "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus with Terry Gilliam and that was the first time I did green screen stuff. I actually loved it. Sure, I love being in a real environment, but on the flipside, to step back into your childhood imagination that you have to employ, I love that. It's a challenge, but it's fun and playful and childish. It's another skill to try and hone.

MTV: It's interesting you bring up Doctor Parnassus. You shot that with Heath Ledger right after he filmed The Dark Knight. Did the two of you ever talk about his experience bringing an iconic comic book character to the screen?

GARFIELD: We never really talked about that. The movie wasn't out, but I knew how excited he was. I was talking to his friends about it, who had been involved in the process, and they were so jazzed about how people were going to react to him. What I learned from watching him in that movie was that it was so honest and specific. Somehow he made this very broad character incredibly honest and human. There's so much to be learned from that, because otherwise during the big fight sequences, who cares, unless you have a good understanding of who the characters fighting are? I'm really excited for Marc Webb, because he's a real stickler for that sort of stuff. He wants everything to come from Peter Parker's dilemma, Gwen Stacy's dilemma, Uncle Ben's dilemma — everyone's struggles, so that in those bigger sequences, it's actually not just a cool fight, but there's heart and specificity.

MTV: I would imagine at this point everyone is giving you advice, mostly unsolicited, about the best way to bring Spider-Man to life. Is there one piece of advice that really sticks out for you as being spot-on?

GARFIELD: I was told by someone who should be listened to — I'm not going to say who it was — he said, "Don't try and live up to it. Don't think you have to live up to what that image and that symbol means to people." And first I thought that was really reassuring. But then you go, "No, I really want to live up to that symbol." When I was 12-years-old I saw the struggle Peter Parker was going through to be of use to society, I wanted to live up to that. And I realized that even Peter Parker is trying to live up to that symbol of Spider-Man he's created. That's what makes him so special: he's undeniably human and going through the same struggles as everyone else. So you try to live up to that symbol and then you have to be OK not living up to it, because not even Peter Parker can do it.

MTV: We spoke to Stan Lee recently, who said the thing to remember is that for all his superpowers, Peter Parker is just a very simple, everyday kid who's good at science and wishes he were more than he is. That sound like good advice to you?

GARFIELD: It's so universal. That's what keeps us getting out of bed in the morning. That's fantastic advice. And coming from Stan Lee, this character is his child and I want to do his vision justice. I want to do him proud. I want to access all of the intentions he had when developing this character. I care very deeply.

Emma has a little to say regarding science class and going back to her 'roots'... See what I did their? Roots as in her hair? Heh... I'm funny.

MTV: It has been quite a year for you. Easy A gets a great reaction, you're shooting all these movies, opposite people like Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling, you host Saturday Night Live, and then you land Spider-Man. Does 2010 feel like a landmark year?

STONE: It feels kind of scary saying because that means it's only downhill, but it's been the best year of my life. Not just with how lucky I've been work-wise, but with my family and friends. I'm totally terrified for 2011. I have such disaster mentality, it's not even funny.

MTV: Which raises the question, are you ready for something as big as Spider-Man? Can you ever be ready for something like that?

STONE: The way I have to approach it, and I think Andrew would agree, is just like any other movie. You're going to put the same amount of focus into this that you would with anything. It just happens to be an exponentially bigger budget. So there's that. It'll probably feel different when we start to do press, but we won't have to deal with that for another year and a half. And there are harnesses I'm going to have to use in this one. That's the only difference. Just the harnesses.

MTV: So you guys are in rehearsals, right? What is that process like at this point?

STONE: Today I went and did hair tests, because I have blonde hair now since Gwen has blonde hair. My natural hair is blonde, so it's kind of nice. I looked in the mirror and said, "Oh my god, it's me again, it's been so long!" We're finalizing the visual stuff. And I think we'll start actually rehearsing, because we start shooting in two weeks. Andrew and I went and learned about science yesterday. Gwen really likes science, so we learned about science. I was home-schooled, so I never went to chemistry class in a traditional setting like Gwen is into. That was really beneficial.

MTV: What have you conversations with Marc been like? Has he encouraged you to go back and read the comics or just concentrate on what's on the page?

STONE: There are a lot of changes happening on a day to day basis. There's a lot of open dialogue about where we're going with this and how Peter and Gwen are going to come together and what makes the most sense for the story we're telling. It's an ever-changing thing. We're still in that development period. It's so fantastic. My background is in improv and things like that, so this kind of ever-changing nature is ideal for me.

MTV: We got to see you kick a little bit of ass in Zombieland? Is Gwen gonna get to do some fighting or is she more of a damsel in distress?

STONE: I wouldn't call Gwen a damsel in distress. But who know what's going to happen? It's so early.

MTV: What's the best piece of advice you've received about stepping in a franchise this big?

STONE: I'm sure it's a different story for Andrew, because Spider-Man is so iconic, which is not to take anything away from Gwen, but for the most part, the approach I'm trying to take so I won't psych myself out is to approach it like anything else. Put in the same amount of work and don't worry so much. Even though it's different than anything else I've ever done and it'll be weird if my face is ever on a Burger King cup, that's not what you have to think about. Maybe it helps other people think about the size of it, but it only makes me nervous.

MTV: People are fiercely protective of Spider-Man. Do you ever worry about how you're going to be received by fans?

STONE: I have such respect for the world of comic book fans. I've been to Comic-Con for Zombieland, and zombie fans are a very specific kind of fan base. And my absolute favorite kind of people in the world are people that are passionate about something. And if there's protective of something they're passionate about it, I can completely relate because there and things I'm passionate about and protective of. There's a part of me that really wants to please people that love Spider-Man or Gwen Stacy and want her to be done justice. I hope they'll give me license to interpret her my way. But that fan base, I'm one of them, so I completely understand why they would be judgmental of certain things. I try not to look [at stories on the Internet] because I do care and I don't want to psych myself out. I kinda half to stay off the Internet. I'm not thick-skinned enough. I get too sensitive. I don't want it to effect what I'm doing.

Say what you will about the upcoming reboot, but I for one am actually happy with this cast. Especially Emma Stone, she is a delight to watch on the screen. Time will tell how Garfield handles the role of Spidey, but I'm sure once we see a pic of Garfield in full on Spidey costume, the nerd world will relax a little.
