'Superman' Update 02.05.11
With the recent announcement that Henry Cavill will be playing Clark Kent/Superman, it's only a matter of time until we hear more casting decisions for the Zack Snyder helmed reboot. Lois Lane, Ma and Pa Kent, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, just to name a few. And that doesn't even get us started on the villains. Everything is still pretty hush about the flick, but we have received some news regarding some female casting.
Similar to the actress shortlist we saw with TDKR, this one features three actresses rumored to be going for the leading role opposite Cavill. Except the role might not be who you think it would...
From /Film:
Warner Bros. is narrowing the search for a female lead to star opposite Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Superman, and three names have emerged, all of which moot previous shortlist stories. Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike are said to be the top choices. But there’s a new wrinkle: the role the studio is looking to cast is not Lois Lane.Variety has the report, and says that the studio doesn’t want someone who might overshadow Henry Cavill. In other words, someone well-established (like the previously rumored Rachel McAdams) isn’t going to get the job.
With big roles in the National Treasure movies and Inglourious Basterds, you’d think that Diane Kruger would also be out, but evidently she makes the cut. Alice Eve flirted with superhero roles when she was in contention for gigs in X-Men: First Class and Captain America. And Rosamund Pike kicked off her film career in a big way with a role as a Bond girl in Die Another Day (a relatively good Bond girl, too ) but then went towards more indie fare. She did a great job in An Education, for instance.
So who could this mystery role be? SuperHeroHype has an idea:
Now, Latino Review, who have gotten many a scoop on Warner Bros.' past superhero movies including the casting of Brian Singer's Superman and Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight, have come forward with some new information they got from one of their inside sources.
First, they say that contrary to rumors, Lois Lane will still be in the movie (possibly playing a smaller role?), but also that the three actresses cited were auditioning for the role of Ursa, who Superman fans will remember from the 1980 sequel Superman II as General Zod's second-in-command. Snyder has mostly denied that General Zod would appear in his movie although that may have changed since he was last asked, and the choice of a European actress would follow in line with her casting in the earlier sequel in which she was played by British actress Sarah Douglas. While I don't think Zod would be the main villain in this reboot, it stands to reason that they could be setting him up as on overall trilogy villain. But of course that's all speculation at this point. I do hope we see Lois Lane and Not Lana Lang in this movie. I've had more than my fill of Lana with Smallville. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot of Superman news in the weeks to come.
UPDATE: According to SuperHeroHype, Diane Kruger has denied these rumors, saying she's not up for a role in the reboot:
"No, it's not true."

Superman Has Been Cast!
The moment a lot of us have been waiting for has finally arrived. The decision has been made as to who will portray Clark Kent/ Superman in Zach Snyder's upcoming reboot. We already heard that they would be searching for an unknown or an up and comer, much like Superman Returns, and well, here he is.
Henry Cavill will play the Man of Steel, and I can definitely agree he has the look. I'm not to familiar with him as an actor, but the same went for Brandon Routh, who has become a favorite of mine. This sits better with me than the rumored Joe Manganiello, who played Flash Thompson in Spider-Man.
Here's a photoshopped look at Cavill as Kal-El from /Film:
Not bad, right? This casting comes on the news that the reboot may be filming in Alberta, Canada much like Inception and Batman Begins, so I'm assuming maybe a Fortress of Solitude scene. I live in Alberta so I know they are coming up here for snow, if they are coming up here.
What do you think about this casting decision? Sound off in the comments section below!

Christopher Nolan Hands Off Superman Reboot
When news broke that Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) along with his bro Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer (Blade Trinity, The Unborn) were going to be the creative force behind the upcoming Superman reboot, there were a lot of happy fans. His work with the bat-franchise is amazing, and Inception was ground-breaking. Then they found a director in Zach Snyder (300, Watchmen) and the project really got under way.
Now Splashpage.mtv reports:
Speaking with Hit Fix, Nolan's wife and producing partner Emma Thomas revealed that "Superman" is currently a Snyder project through and through, saying: "We are handing it off to him."
Thomas revealed that the Nolan team simply brought the new "Superman" movie "to an appropriate screenplay," with the rest of the work falling on Snyder and his trustworthy crew.
So while Nolan's involvement would have been preferred, you also don't want too many hands in the cookie jar. And it's about damn time Superman got a good movie that will please the fans, the general populace, and the financial requirement's of the studio's so we can get a proper franchise out of this.
And since we are on the subject of Nolan, Lets talk The Dark Knight Rises. From the same article he talks about the rumors from...well, us, the online entertainment community.
The filmmaker said that he feels that speculation surrounding "The Dark Knight Rises" is coming at an alarmingly early stage, given the fact that he's still finishing the film's screenplay. Nolan said that he's far from finished with casting, especially because the script isn't finalized just yet.
And over at SuperHeroHype:
Nolan, bearded and affable, explained that he’s scrambling to finish the script for The Dark Knight Rises, his third Batman movie, which he’s writing in collaboration with his brother Jonathan, mostly from his oceanfront abode in the Paradise Cove trailer park in Malibu. The script is due in January for a July release. But he wouldn’t say what the story’s about or who the villain is, other than to confirm that Inception’s Tom Hardy will play “a key role, not saying good or bad,” and to shoot down reports that he’ll resurrect The Joker by including unused footage of Heath Ledger’s performance in the previous chapter. “That’s all wrong.”
Good to hear, let the performance stay where it is, and move on. I can't wait until we finally get some details on this flick, but filming is supposed to begin in May, so hopefully we'll have a finished script soon.

'All-Star Superman' Is The Next DC Animated Movie
DC has really been kicking ass and taking names when it comes to the animated movies that they are producing. With a new one almost every three or four months, DC is getting some of their greatest stories told in a new way and brought to new people.
All-Star Superman is the next feature to come out, and I couldn't be happier. This was one of the greatest Superman tales I have ever read, and it was written by Grant Morrison, which pretty much guarantees it's awesomeness. Not to mention the great art of Frank Quitely.
SuperHeroHype gives us the full specs of the upcoming release as well as the cover art:
Grant Morrison’s beloved, Eisner Award-winning vision of Superman’s heroic final days on Earth is brought to exquisite animated life in All-Star Superman, the latest entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies coming February 22, 2011 from Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation. The highly-anticipated, full-length film will be distributed by Warner Home Video as a Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD for $24.98 (SRP), as well as single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP). The film will also be available On Demand and for Download.
In All-Star Superman, the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) and, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Sensing even he will be unable to cheat death, Superman ventures into new realms – finally revealing his secret to Lois, confronting Lex Luthor’s perspective of humanity, and attempting to ensure Earth’s safety before his own impending end with one final, selfless act.
The celebrity-packed voice cast is headed by James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, and Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Lex Luthor. The stellar cast includes seven-time Emmy® Award winner Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White, Golden Globe® winner Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Ma Kent, Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as Jimmy Olsen and Linda Cardellini (ER) as Nasty.

The Search For The Next Superman Begins!
Breaking News!!! This Just In!!! Action!!! Umm, I think you get it...
Hot off the announcement (like 3 months ago) that Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) will be directing the Superman reboot and Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) will be producing, it seems the casting search has begun for who will fill the red booties and outside-the-pants ginch of Superman.
Personally I would love to see Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs The World) given another shot at Supes, but this time in a ... well... good movie.
Splashpage.mtv reports:
Deadline reports that Warner Bros., producer Christopher Nolan, and director Zack Snyder are casting a "wide net" for an actor to play Superman in the upcoming reboot of the movie franchise. The report echoes many of the previous qualifications rumored for potential candidates, including the studio's willingness to go after an unknown or lesser-known actor, and an age range of 28-to-32.
The report also indicates that the studio is targeting a June 2011 start for production on the film due to the 2009 judgment that saw much of the rights to Superman revert back to creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster in 2013. The studio is also required to put a new film into production in 2011 in order to avoid owing profits to the Siegel and Schuster families.
The report goes on to name-check many of the potential Superman actors that have been rumored over the last few months, including Armie Hammer ("The Social Network") and Joe Manganiello ("True Blood"). The report also adds "Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder as a potential candidate, but reiterates that the schedule for the project will likely cut out television actors.
"Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm was originally listed as a potential candidate in Deadline's report, but his name was removed in a subsequent edit of the story. Whether that means he's more or lesslikely to be in the mix is anybody's guess.
It's a tough job to find the right Superman, and even harder to pull off a Clark Kent. Brandon Routh did a great job as CK, and an ok job as Supes, but Superman Returns was not the Superman movie we needed to see at that point in the film's franchise. And reboot's seem to be the status quo these days, so it fits. I am always frightened when plans for a Superman movie are announced, for one big reason.
Back in '98 they tried to make a Superman movie and this almost happened:
You think I'm joking? I'm really not...
Even more frightening, it was going to be directed by Tim Burton (who I usually love) and it turned into this:
Edward Superhands? Okay, that was bad, I admit it
So while the fear will always remain, I do have high hopes for this flick. Snyder has a certain style that I sometimes love and sometimes despise. Watchmen was a great adaptation, but was it a great movie?
Anyways, I digress. I wait with bated breath to see who might play Clark Kent/ Superman, and hopefully some more info on the story. I want a big ass supervillain! The only big fight scene in a Superman movie was in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace against Nuclear Man, and it was pretty horrendous. I'll even take a giant robot or something even more lame, as long as I see Supes beating the shit out of it.
