'Spider-Man' Update 02.05.11

Behind the scenes pics, web-slingin Spidey, and my take on a possible villain?

There have been a lot of photos from the set of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot helmed by Marc Webb. And, well, I have some more photos to show.A lot more. But some of them show something, well, pretty interesting... or just odd.

First off we go to SuperHeroHype, where they have some on set pics of Spidey fighting a truck or something:

Here's a video of Spidey doing some web-swinging... sorta:

Here are some more shots from /Film:

Thanks to another LA shoot, there are a load of new Spider-Man set photos online today. They’ll only fuel the debate over whether the costume is pretty good or pretty terrible.
Points of argument so far: what’s up with the thin, barely visible spider on his back? Why is his crotch black? And, er, exactly what fighting style is that we’re seeing? Kidding about the last one (mostly) but I think what most people are wondering is just how this look will translate to a final version that will be glossed up with CGI, color corrected and so forth. I keep going back to the official promo photo, where the costume looks a lot better than this, and hoping that represents what we’ll really see, with all this as just raw material.
There's a lot of photos here, so I'll show a few and you can check the link above for the rest. Plus some more pics over here.

Here's where things get weird. Over at Splashpage they have a closer look at some of the photos, which reveals... well, take a look:
Taken on the Los Angeles set of the film, the two photos depict a stunt sequence in which Spider-Man vaults over a car to tackle, flip, and subdue a character in a black jacket (as only a spider can).
But here's the kicker: Take a close look at the car behind Spider-Man and the black-jacketed combatant. Don't see anything? How about in the back seat of the car?
Here's how the photographer who took these photos described the scene being filmed:
"The Spider Man Reboot films a scene involving a car burglar and two Spider-Man's which both appear on camera. In the scene, Andrew Garfield in character as Spider-Man is hiding in the back seat of a car that a car burglar attempts to steal. The spooked thief exits the car to escape but is taken down by a second Spider-Man as Spider-Man number one (Garfield) watches the action through the backseat window. Both Spider man's were also seen rehearsing a stunt together while covered in trench coats."

So, why do we have two Spider-Men? Could they possibly be starting the reboot with a Clone Saga? Doubtful. Here's my opinion. And remember, this is totally up in the air.
The first thing that came to me when I saw these was the numerous issues of Spidey where an imposter appeared and wrecked havoc in his life. And usually done at the hands of one supervillain nobody has really tied to this reboot.
Mysterio.
I'm serious, there's a lot of clues that point to it, and that could be the reason why these photos are out, to try and throw people off the track. Two Spider-Men, one in a slightly shoddy costume, with the zipper undone and the missing eye pieces.
These are all factors that could be attributed to the filming process, but what if we are really seeing gimmicks Mysterio is using to discredit Spidey, or just use the costume for his nefarious needs.
Not to mention we haven't officially received word that Rhys Ifans will be playing the role of Dr. Curt Connors/ The Lizard as rumored in the reboot. It could be just as likely he might be playing Quentin Beck/ Mysterio, a role fans originally hoped Bruce Campbell would be playing in Raimi's Spider-Man 4.
Also check out Spidey sticking on this truck, which looks to be covered in tape or something. Yea, that could be part of filming, but would they really need to use that to get the shot? They have the wire on him, for a high budget movie shouldn't that be less obvious. It's almost like it's attracting the attention.
Or... I'm totally reaching and this has nothing to do with the appearance of two Spider-Men. I'm still not sure how I feel about the costume, but it's also still really early. There will be lots more to see, and hopefully a trailer will settle the nerves of some die hard fans... like myself.
Spider-Man is set to be released on 07.03.2012
