Ziggy Marley's MarijuanaMan!

And other chemically enhanced heroes to celebrate 420 with...

Today is April 20th, and for some it's more commonly known as 420. It's a day held in celebration of marijuana, but we'll honor it in a more... legal way.

On sale today is MarijuanaMan, a graphic novel created by Ziggy Marley, reggae musician and son of Bob Marley. Comics Alliance has the hookup:

On sale now -- 4/20 -- is Marijuanaman, a 40-page hardcover graphic novella devised by reggae star Ziggy Marley. Written by Joe Casey and illustrated beautifully by Jim Mahfood, the story is about a noble alien whose species has THC instead of DNA and his biological reaction to Earth's cannabis plants causes him to transform into the superhero Marijuanaman and fight against an evil pharmaceutical corporation and its hired thug, Cash Money, and make the world aware of what "it's all about" -- which is to say, hemp

"Marijuanaman represents the hope of the future... the hope that we will utilize all of the power that the universe has given us to save our planet," Marley explained in a press release in support of the graphic novella.

Here's the teaser trailer:

There's a lot more about it at the link above. I want to see a Bluntman & Chronic crossover with MarijuanaMan. That would be dope. Heh. Moving on.

Over at Newsarama they use this day to take a look at the Top 5 Chemically Enhanced Heroes. I'll show you a couple of the selections and you can check the rest out at the link.

Cloak & Dagger
First TimeSpectacular Spider-Man #64 March, 1982
Drug of Choice: A synthetic Heroin
Still Using? This particular pair of teens had an injection forced upon them by Simon Marshall, working for the villain Silvermane. Rather than getting addicted or even sick, they got superpowers. Like you do. For some reason, in Marvel's recent years, they thought maybe this wasn't the best message, that heroin gives you superpowers, and decided to alter their origin slightly. See, it turns out that Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen were actually mutants, and the trauma of the injection activated their powers. It was just a really happy coincidence that he had dark powers and her light powers calmed him. So remember kids, you will only get superpowers from synthetic heroin if you're already secretly a mutant teenager whose powers haven't activated and you happen upon another mutant teenager whose powers haven't activated who gets injected at the same time.

Elongated Man
First TimeThe Flash #112 May, 1960
Drug of Choice: Gingold
Still Using? Ralph Dibny apparently does have superpowers, he just needs his drug to bring them out, in regular dosing. "But it's an extract, it's natural!" is likely heard anytime he's trying to justify it. Ralph isn't using gingold anymore, not because he kicked the habit, but because he died, killed by Neron while he was apparently trying to resurrect his wife Sue (though that was a ploy), who was killed by their dear friend Jean Loring. We won't get into what happened to Sue before that, but the two of them are now ghost detectives, and he doesn't need drugs to be in that form.

That's all I'm giving you! Go check out the rest of the link for the rest. #1 is worth it for the click alone.

Think what you will about those that celebrate the 'holiday', I'm not here to advocate or discredit either side. It's not about who smokes marijuana and who doesn't. It's simply about sharing information and different viewpoints, spreading the word. There are a lot of negative connotations when it comes to pot use, but there's also a lot of misinformation. All I'm saying is people are quick to judge, and there is an entire interesting sub-culture out there with a lot to say about the world around them. You might be surprised by what you hear.

Happy 420 Everybody!
