'Deadpool' Lands A Director!

VFX artist Tim Miller lands his first directing gig, Ryan Reynolds still involved, plus a possible title for the film...

There's been a lot of talk over whether or not the upcoming Deadpool movie is really going to happen, but both the actor (Ryan Reynolds) and the studio want it to happen.

With news just hitting that the Deadpool movie has gotten a director, chances of Reynolds being involved are getting better if the studio can iron everything out to fit his presumably busy schedule after starring in the competitions Green Lantern.

Deadline reports:

EXCLUSIVE: Tim Miller, who has done strong visual effects work on X-Men and other VFX-heavy films, was just set by 20th Century Fox to make his feature directing debut on X-Men Origins: Deadpool, the X-Men spinoff film expected to star Ryan Reynolds. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the script and Lauren Shuler Donner is producing. WME just signed him.

And that brings us to the next point to speak about. Apparently they are going with the X-Men Origins title on this, which I thinks brings a connection to X-Men Origins: Wolverine that a lot of us weren't hoping for. Something else I wasn't aware of is brought up later in the article:

Fox has the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men Origins: First Class coming out June 3.

I didn't know that the upcoming X-Men: First Class was a part of the Origins banner, so I'm not sure if this was a mistake or a name change. It wouldn't be the first name change we've heard about lately.

Anyway's good news on the Deadpool front. I actually heard about it via Rob Liefeld's Twitter. Here is what he said:

Deadpool film gets its director!! http://dlvr.it/MvXgp congrats to all involved for maximizing Ryan Reynolds in his prime! That script is !!

So that's obviously another semi-confirmation that Reynolds is still the star attached, which I am fine with. Yea, I'm not exactly a fan of 2 or 3 guys playing half the superheroes in Hollywood, but Reynolds does seem like a good choice to bring the "merc-with-a-mouth" to the big screen... properly.

Hopefully the rookie director can bring us the Deadpool everyone wants to see, and maybe redeem the X-Men Origins banner. Especially with word on the script being very good.

What do you think, News Team? Are you eager to see X-Men Origins: Deadpool, if that's what the title will be? How do you feel about Ryan Reynolds filling the role?

  1. This does not instill me with confidence. A first time director whose specialty is Special Effects and no experience with story...not impressed.
