The Search For The Next Superman Begins!

Breaking News!!! This Just In!!! Action!!! Umm, I think you get it...

Hot off the announcement (like 3 months ago) that Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) will be directing the Superman reboot and Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) will be producing, it seems the casting search has begun for who will fill the red booties and outside-the-pants ginch of Superman.

Personally I would love to see Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs The World) given another shot at Supes, but this time in a ... well... good movie.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros., producer Christopher Nolan, and director Zack Snyder are casting a "wide net" for an actor to play Superman in the upcoming reboot of the movie franchise. The report echoes many of the previous qualifications rumored for potential candidates, including the studio's willingness to go after an unknown or lesser-known actor, and an age range of 28-to-32.
The report also indicates that the studio is targeting a June 2011 start for production on the film due to the 2009 judgment that saw much of thrights to Superman revert back to creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster in 2013. The studio is also required to put a new film into production in 2011 in order to avoid owing profits to the Siegel and Schuster families.
The report goes on to name-check many of the potential Superman actors that have been rumored over the last few months, including Armie Hammer ("The Social Network") and Joe Manganiello ("True Blood"). The report also adds "Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder as a potential candidate, but reiterates that the schedule for the project will likely cut out television actors.
"Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm was originally listed as a potential candidate in Deadline's report, but his name was removed in a subsequent edit of the story. Whether that means he's more or lesslikely to be in the mix is anybody's guess.
It's a tough job to find the right Superman, and even harder to pull off a Clark Kent. Brandon Routh did a great job as CK, and an ok job as Supes, but Superman Returns was not the Superman movie we needed to see at that point in the film's franchise. And reboot's seem to be the status quo these days, so it fits. I am always frightened when plans for a Superman movie are announced, for one big reason.

Back in '98 they tried to make a Superman movie and this almost happened:

You think I'm joking? I'm really not...

Even more frightening, it was going to be directed by Tim Burton (who I usually love) and it turned into this:

Edward Superhands? Okay, that was bad, I admit it

So while the fear will always remain, I do have high hopes for this flick. Snyder has a certain style that I sometimes love and sometimes despise. Watchmen was a great adaptation, but was it a great movie?

Anyways, I digress. I wait with bated breath to see who might play Clark Kent/ Superman, and hopefully some more info on the story. I want a big ass supervillain! The only big fight scene in a Superman movie was in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace against Nuclear Man, and it was pretty horrendous. I'll even take a giant robot or something even more lame, as long as I see Supes beating the shit out of it.
