Versus # 3 - Captain America vs. Deathstroke

The Battle of the Super Soldier

Versus! came about in part due to some inspiration from the series Marvel vs. DC, but so far none of the contenders from that series have been featured. And duplicating those matches just isn’t what we all want to see. These battles are straight up about who would fight a good fight. Worthy, matched contenders that would prove to be each other’s equals, until one of them kicked the other’s ass, that is. The point is our next contender was a part of Marvel vs. DC, and now makes his debut on Versus!

Now our last match up was Iron Man vs. Lex Luthor, with Luthor taking it 2-1. Kron and I picked Luthor overall, and Adam Wit gave the dissenting vote. This sparked some controversy and a lot of great arguments from you B!K!er’s, as most of you seem to agree with Mr. Wit. Which is of course the point of all this. So this time we will be joined by Grizzly Bomb's Steve Sanchez (hopefully without the hobbit feet) and take a look at our next round:

Captain America (Steve Rogers) vs. Deathstroke the Terminator (Slade Wilson)

SupaScoot

Steve Rogers was injected with the Super Soldier serum and exposed to “Vita-Rays”, causing him to transform from a 90 lb. weakling into the pinnacle of human physicality. He fights for his country, wearing his flag, and has fought in multiple wars since the 40’s, chalking up the experience points. He is a master tactician, leader, and expert combatant. With a fused mix of fighting styles as his own, people come to him for combat training. His uniform is made of fire-retardant, lightweight, bulletproof "duralumin" scale armor and he wields an indestructible shield that he can throw with amazing accuracy.

Slade Wilson was given enhanced physical powers during experiments to create super soldiers for the U.S. Military. Having already received a high level of military training, he was further gifted with heightened strength, speed, agility, stamina, and reflexes. He can use up to 90% of his brain at any one time, allowing for superior tactics and a manipulative intelligence. He became a mercenary, specializing in assassinations, and is the go to merc in the DCU. He periodically beats Batman hand-to-hand, which is no easy feat. He also possesses a limited healing factor, enabling speedy recovery. His body armor is composed of a mesh-woven, kevlar, chainlink mail made with “depleted promethium” metal. He is a master of most weapons, but is usually seen with an energy charged power staff made of the same depleted promethium.

This was a really tough battle for me. As for the better character, I have to give it to Captain America. This man is a symbol of heroism, his country, and the every man. Someone to aspire to be, but who you can also relate to. Deathstroke has some great stories, and they have really flushed out his character over the years, but when it comes down to the better character, Cap has it all. Dude was fighting Hitler and getting sidekicks killed long before it was cool. Then he got frozen in ice, came out years later, and continued to own shop around the nation and the world. Deathstroke killed some guys, effed with a bunch of kids, and for all his power, has never really done anything too memorable to affect the DCU as a whole, whereas Captain America is the inspiration for every hero in the Marvel U. Even the Punisher looks up to Cap.

Now for the lamb and tuna fish of Versus!

(maybe you like spaghetti and meatball, if your more comfortable with that analogy?)

Who would win? For me this is a blowout. I’m giving it to Captain America. This would be an epic battle, two peak physical combatants trained to the tits. Their weapons wouldn’t be too much of an issue, as they would easily be able to disarm the other. This would go down man-to-man, nut-to-nut. And the reason I give it Cap is this comes down to a soldier fighting a merc. Cap doesn’t quit… ever. “You think this letter on my head stands for France?”

Deathstroke just doesn’t get paid if he gives up. Honor wouldn’t factor in for Slade, and Cap is always fighting for something, it’s what gives him his strength. This match comes down to Cap’s will, and the Terminator is no match for that.

SupaScoot’s Winner: Captain America

Dr. Kronner

For me Captain America is the pinnacle of the Marvel Universe. Yesteryear’s idealism in today’s flawed world. The height of Military training and a set of super powers to boot. Not to mention the sweetest, most indestructable shield ever. Deathstroke on the other hand is DC’s deadliest mercinary. He moves and fights like Cap, but he’s better at it. Cap is the embodiment of the that a man should be, but that includes honor. Deathstroke isn’t hamstrung by that same problem.

I love Cap, he is exactly what we’re missing today. But in the DC vs. MARVEL series, Batman put down Cap. However Bats has lost to Deathstroke more than once. Also, if you remember IDENITY CRISIS, Deathstroke showed his metal against almost the whole JLA before Supes showed up. As much as it pains me to say, this ends with a sword in the gut of America…

Kronner’s Winner: Deathstroke

Steve Sanchez

Okay, seems to me like Captain America and Deathstroke are pretty evenly matched.  Both are complete tactical geniuses. Both are experts in many forms of combat and have the ability to use all sorts of weapons and have super duper reflexes, speed and strength. Captain America- Impervious shield. Death Stroke- Impervious armor. Even though they are so evenly matched and I prefer Marvel characters over DC, I have to give this one to Deathstroke. Not only did he disable the Flash and Impulse while they were running with a gun and fought Wolverine to a standstill, but he beat Batman a couple times. Let that one sink in for a minute. He beat BATMAN. The Batman who beat Superman on a couple occasions. Heyooo Deathstroke. Good day Cap.

Sanchez’s Winner: Deathstroke

WINNER - Deathstroke by a score of 2-1.

Kronner’s Closing Statement:

So DC jumps out to a 3-0 lead in the overall standings. Wow, really wasn’t expecting that. Deathstroke’s defeat of Batman is really what won it for him here…
